“I started knocking down a wall and found heavy electrical wiring and plumbing inside — what do I do?”
Stop, and kill the circuit at the panel before anything else. Then find out what is in there: live romex can be rerouted by an electrician in a few hours, but a stack vent or a main drain line inside a wall changes the plan entirely and sometimes changes which wall you take out.
Do not cut anything you have not traced. This is the single most common reason a weekend demo becomes a three-week project.
Rot means water has been running somewhere for a long time, so the first job is finding the source — usually a wax ring, a shower pan, or a supply line — before any new material goes down.
Rot also tends to be larger than what is visible. Once the surface is open, it is worth pulling the full extent of the damage rather than stopping at the stain.
